Body
Neutrality

Body neutrality is a concept that's gained popularity in recent years as a response to the body positivity movement. While body positivity aims to promote self-love and acceptance of our bodies, body neutrality takes a more neutral stance by emphasising the importance of not assigning a moral value to our body at all

What is Body Neutrality?

Body neutrality is the practice of accepting our body as it is without judging it as good or bad. It's about shifting the focus away from appearance and toward what our bodies can do for us. It's a way of thinking that encourages us to treat our bodies with respect, regardless of how they look.

Body neutrality acknowledges that the way we feel about our bodies is often influenced by societal expectations and beauty standards. It recognises that while it's important to feel good about ourselves, the constant pressure to look a certain way can be harmful to our mental health and well-being.

Why is Body Neutrality Important?

The importance of body neutrality is rooted in its ability to promote a healthier and more sustainable relationship with our bodies. It helps us to let go of the constant pursuit of perfection and instead focus on what truly matters – health, happiness, and well-being.

By assigning a moral value to our bodies, we create a hierarchy of bodies – some are good, and some are bad. This can create feelings of shame, guilt, and inadequacy, which can impact our mental health and self-esteem. It can also lead to disordered eating, exercise addiction, and other harmful behaviours.

Body neutrality offers a more compassionate and inclusive approach to body acceptance. It acknowledges that bodies come in all shapes and sizes and that every body deserves to be respected and cared for. It also recognises that bodies change over time and that this is a natural part of the human experience.

Tips For Practicing Body Neutrality

Focus on Function, Not Appearance

Shift your focus away from how your body looks and toward what it can do for you. Focus on the things your body allows you to do, such as walk, run, dance, or play with your children. Appreciate your body for the amazing things it can do, rather than how it looks.

Challenge Negative Self-Talk

Notice when you're engaging in negative self-talk and challenge it. When you find yourself criticizing your body, ask yourself if this is a helpful or harmful thought. Reframe your thoughts in a more neutral or positive way.

Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

Avoid comparing your body to others. Remember that every body is unique and that we all have our own strengths and weaknesses. Instead of focusing on what others look like, focus on what makes you unique and special.

Practice Self-Care

Take care of your body in a way that feels good to you. This might mean getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods, or engaging in regular exercise. Do things that make you feel good, and treat your body with kindness and respect.

Surround Yourself with Body-Positive Messages

Surround yourself with positive messages about body image and self-acceptance. Follow social media accounts that promote body positivity and body neutrality, and seek out resources that support a healthy relationship with your body.

Understanding Neutrality

Finding the balance between self-love and self-acceptance, and recognising that our worth as individuals should not be determined by our physical appearance

Food
Neutrality

The idea that all foods can fit into a balanced and healthy diet. It encourages individuals to avoid labelling foods as "good" or "bad" and to avoid strict food rules or restrictions.
